Unplugged: A Day without My Phone
For this assignment instead of unplugging from just a single media for a day i decided to completely unplug from my phone for a whole day.The idea of unplugging for a whole day for a while seemed like a concept out of reach for me but i didn’t expect it to be as easy as it was. When I first decided to unplug from my phone for a day, I personally thought it would be a read challenge knowing how i used to be on my phone 24/7.Like most people, I’m so used to checking my phone every few minutes, for messages, updates, or just out of habit. It’s almost like second nature. But once i actually set my phone aside, something surprising happened, i felt free.
I started my day regularly how i would usually start it with a cup of coffee in the morning but this time without looking at my phone. Instead of my usual morning scrolling through social media the first thing i did while drinking my coffee was i picked up the current book of Harry Potter am in which is the Chamber of Secrets. It had being my first time in a while that i had sat down to just read a book with a coffee in hand and i forgot how much i actually loved the feeling of it.I got completely caught up in the story, the characters, the magic, the adventure i even cried during some of the sadder scenes in the book.Without my phone constantly buzzing or lighting up, I was able to focus in a way that felt rare. It reminded me that reading can be just as exciting as anything online, or maybe actually even more. The idea of being able to transfer your self to an imaginary world just by picking up a book really opened my eyes to it.
After what seemed like maybe a few minutes of reading i checked my kitchen clock and saw a few hours had passed by without me realizing it. After i had realized I decided to go out for a walk with my family.Usually, when I go out I would be on my phone taking pictures or listening to music while walking. But this time, none of that happened. We just walked, talked, and enjoyed the nice weather. It felt refreshing to be fully present and not worry about notification or who might be posting what online.I noticed the little things I probably would have missed before, like the sound of the wind, the colors of the trees and its leaves, and the laughter between us as we just walked and talked.
Even though my unplugging experience only lasted a short time, it had a big impact on me.I realized how much i rely on my phone entertainment or distraction, and how much time it quietly takes away from other parts of my life. This one unplugged day showed me that I don’t need to constantly be connected to feel fulfilled. In fact, I felt calmer, happier, and more focused.
Now that am more aware of about it and i can try and be more mindful about how i use my phone.I still check it, of course, but i make sure it doesn’t control my entire day. I want to keep making time for reading, family walks, and quiet moments without the screen in front of me.
In the end, this experience taught me something simple but important, disconnecting doesn’t mean losing connection it means reconnecting with what really matters.Whether its family, books or just time to think, unplugging gave me space to enjoy life in a more meaningful way.I think everyone should try it at least once, even if its just for a day.You might be surprise by how much you gain when you finally put your phone down.
